Ground Control CEO Highlights Maritime GNSS Spoofing Threats and Multi-Layer Navigation Solutions

In an industry analysis published on September 8, 2026, satellite connectivity provider Ground Control addressed the operational risks facing commercial maritime navigation from persistent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference.

Ground Control Chief Executive Officer Alastair MacLeod outlined how electronic warfare tactics—specifically GPS and GNSS spoofing—have shifted maritime navigation hazards from signal denial to signal deception.

Interference Metrics and Threat Profiles

Maritime tracking data from early 2026 logged over 1,700 GNSS interference events across the Strait of Hormuz, with more than 1,100 vessels reporting false inland coordinates in a single 24-hour period. Furthermore, a 2026 study conducted by the Royal Institute of Navigation revealed that 75 percent of surveyed mariners believe GNSS interference is remaining at current elevated levels or actively worsening.

Unlike conventional jamming, which blocks radio frequency signals and triggers immediate receiver loss alerts, spoofing broadcasts altered positioning telemetry. A compromised receiver continues to report plausible latitude and longitude data, tricking automated bridge navigation systems and pushing commercial vessels into disputed territorial waters or hazardous shipping channels.

The analysis follows Ground Control’s deployment of hybrid satellite-cellular telemetry hardware designed to maintain out-of-band data links during localized terrestrial network disruptions.

“In contested waters, a position is only as trustworthy as its source,” stated Alastair MacLeod, Chief Executive Officer of Ground Control. “For years the main risk to satellite navigation was assumed to be jamming, the brute force denial of a signal. Spoofing, however, is a tougher problem to solve. A spoofed receiver can keep reporting a plausible position with apparent confidence, even when that position is false. Satellite navigation remains remarkably useful, but independent positioning is already available to strengthen it today.”

Multi-Layer Resilient Positioning Rationale

While long-term non-terrestrial network (NTN) integration into 3GPP cellular standards promises multi-orbit backup connectivity, vessel operators require immediate mitigation strategies. Maritime security experts recommend deploying multi-sensor positioning architectures—combining traditional GNSS feeds with inertial navigation units, dead reckoning sensors, and terrestrial radio positioning—to cross-check satellite telemetry and maintain independent position verification in contested operational environments.
