Arianespace Secures Contract for 10 Ariane 64 Launch Vehicles, Allocating Six Missions to Amazon Leo

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, launch service provider Arianespace announced a commercial agreement for 10 Ariane 64 heavy-lift launch vehicles.

The contract expansion—marking Arianespace’s largest single order addition for the Ariane 6 program in 2026—allocates six dedicated missions to deploy satellite broadband capacity for Amazon Leo, Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation formerly known as Project Kuiper.

Backlog Expansion and Orbital Deployment Context

The 10-launch order significantly expands Arianespace’s commercial manifest at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. The six dedicated missions for Amazon Leo provide crucial heavy-lift launch capacity as Amazon scales its orbital deployment campaign to meet regulatory deployment milestones established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The award builds directly upon Arianespace’s industrial ramp-up of the Ariane 6 heavy-lift launch system and follows recent commercial progress, including an agreement between ICEYE and Arianespace to evaluate Ariane 6 launches for European sovereign SAR missions.

Concurrently, Amazon continues expanding its enterprise terrestrial partnerships, leveraging orbital capacity through initiatives such as AT&T and Amazon’s strategic multi-layered Kuiper-Cloud Pact.

Ariane 64 Heavy-Lift Technical Specifications

The Ariane 64 variant represents the high-capacity configuration of the Ariane 6 family, engineered specifically for high-density constellation deployment and heavy geostationary orbit transfers:

  • Solid Rocket Boosters: Features four solid rocket boosters (P120C) attached to the main cryogenic stage, delivering maximum liftoff thrust to carry dense satellite stacks.
  • Payload Capacity: Capable of delivering up to 21.6 metric tons to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and up to 11.5 metric tons to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO).
  • Vulcain 2.1 & Vinci Engines: Powered by an upgraded Vulcain 2.1 core engine burning liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen (LOX/LH2), paired with a re-ignitable Vinci upper stage engine for precise multi-orbit payload separation sequences.
  • Large Fairing Architecture: Utilizes a 20-meter composite fairing, maximizing internal volume to accommodate stacked satellite dispensers engineered for multi-craft constellation deployment.

Commercial Market Impact and European Launch Industrial Rationale

Securing 10 firm Ariane 64 orders reinforces Europe’s commercial positioning in the international launch market. The influx of commercial launch demand provides long-term manifest visibility for ArianeGroup’s European manufacturing supply chain and supports high-cadence launch site operations in Kourou.

For Amazon Leo, securing heavy-lift launches outside North America ensures manifest diversification across global launch service providers. By distributing satellite launches across Arianespace, United Launch Alliance (ULA), and SpaceX, Amazon mitigates launch site bottleneck risks while maintaining continuous satellite delivery to orbit.

Addressing the milestone contract addition, Arianespace leadership highlighted the role of heavy-lift launch capacity in sustaining global satellite infrastructure.

Manifest Schedule and Flight Campaign Roadmap

Integration work and long-lead component manufacturing for the 10 Ariane 64 launch vehicles are underway across ArianeGroup production facilities in France and Germany. Pad integration and flight operations will take place at Launch Complex 4 (ELA-4) at the Guiana Space Centre, with the six dedicated Amazon Leo launches scheduled to begin manifest integration across upcoming flight campaigns extending through 2027 and 2028.
