Eutelsat Names Eclipse as First European OneWeb Government Aviation Distribution Partner for French Defense Fleets

On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, satellite communications operator Eutelsat Group announced a commercial and defense distribution agreement designating Paris-based systems integrator Eclipse Global Connectivity (Eclipse) as its first European OneWeb Government Aviation Distribution Partner (DP).

The partnership expands Eclipse’s airborne connectivity portfolio to supply Eutelsat’s OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) airtime, terminals, and software solutions directly to the French Armed Forces and French Government aircraft operators.

Program History and Multi-Orbit Expansion Context

The partnership marks a significant operational milestone in Eutelsat’s European defense strategy, leveraging OneWeb’s LEO constellation to deliver low-latency airborne connectivity to government platforms. The agreement builds upon Eutelsat Group’s 69.5 percent LEO revenue surge driven by OneWeb constellation expansion, which solidified the combined entity’s commercial momentum across government, maritime, and in-flight connectivity verticals.

Eclipse brings more than three decades of experience in airborne satellite integration, aircraft certification, and military avionics. The partnership formalizes a long-term collaboration between the companies, expanding on Eclipse’s initial authorization as a OneWeb Distribution Partner for government aviation in EMEA markets.

Furthermore, the deployment builds upon technical validations of LEO aeronautical terminals, including Gilat’s successful flight testing of electronically steered antennas (ESA) on the Eutelsat OneWeb network.

Aeronautical Architecture and Certification Parameters

The integrated aviation solution combines Eutelsat’s global LEO constellation with specialized hardware, cabin networking equipment, and Eclipse’s proprietary software framework. The architecture is engineered to provide high-throughput, low-latency broadband connectivity to crewed and uncrewed aircraft operating in demanding operational environments.

Key technical parameters of the aeronautical system include:

  • Certified Platform Integration: Leverages Eclipse’s European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Design Organization Approval (DOA) and Production Organization Approval (POA) to certify satellite terminals and radomes across diverse military and government aircraft frames.
  • Aero+ Software Management: Incorporates Eclipse’s DO-178 certified software stack to execute real-time traffic optimization, bandwidth allocation, and secure data routing for operational mission systems.
  • High-Throughput LEO Links: Delivers full-duplex, low-latency orbital data links to support tactical command-and-control (C2), full-motion video transmission, airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) relays, and encrypted executive communications.

Sovereign Defense Market and European Strategic Rationale

The agreement directly supports France’s push for sovereign, resilient defense communications capabilities that reduce reliance on non-European mega-constellations. By pairing a French-headquartered satellite operator with a domestic aeronautical integrator, the French Armed Forces secure a sovereign supply chain for critical flight connectivity.

For defense aircraft operators, LEO satellite connectivity offers crucial performance advantages over legacy Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) systems. The low-latency profile of OneWeb’s 600-plus satellite constellation enables real-time synchronization of cryptographic devices, seamless cloud application performance—including Microsoft Office 365 and command networks—and high-definition video streaming from airborne sensors directly to ground command units at machine speed.

Operational Deployment Timeline and Fleet Expansion

Deployment under the agreement will begin immediately, with installation and integration work commencing in September 2026. The first French military aircraft is scheduled to be retrofitted with OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity hardware before the end of September 2026, establishing a flight-proven baseline for broader fleet-wide rollouts across French defense and head-of-state aircraft through 2027.
