Ground Control Highlights Satellite IoT as Essential Enabler for UK’s 2027 BVLOS Drone Mandate

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, satellite connectivity provider Ground Control published an operational analysis evaluating the UK government’s mandate to establish routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) commercial drone operations by 2027.

Alastair MacLeod, Chief Executive Officer of Ground Control, outlined how satellite IoT and hybrid telecommunications infrastructure are required to meet regulatory flight safety standards across uncrewed aerial systems (UAS).

UK Regulatory Roadmap and Telecommunications Limits

The policy framework is anchored in the Department for Transport’s Future of Flight action plan and supported by Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) operational guidance under published roadmap CAP3182. The strategy sets 2027 as the target year for commercial uncrewed aircraft to execute routine autonomous flights across logistics, infrastructure inspection, emergency services, and offshore delivery sectors.

While terrestrial 4G/5G and LTE networks provide high-data coverage along urban transit corridors, signal propagation drops significantly in low-altitude rural, mountainous, and maritime environments. Maintaining continuous command-and-control (C2) and real-time telemetry links across uncrewed traffic management (UTM) networks requires dynamic failover options to prevent loss-of-signal events during long-range BVLOS transits.

Satellite Connectivity Specifications and Hybrid Terminal Architecture

To meet CAA airworthiness and safety requirements, drone manufacturers are integrating satellite IoT modules directly into onboard avionics. The analysis follows Ground Control’s launch of compact satellite and cellular IoT terminals and builds upon industry demonstrations of lightweight SATCOM terminals for uncrewed aerial vehicles.

Key technical features of hybrid satellite IoT systems for BVLOS operations include:

  • Dual-Path Redundancy: Automatically routes telemetry and flight commands over LEO or MSS satellite links when terrestrial cellular signals are obstructed or unavailable.
  • Low SWaP-C Footprint: Features low Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) form factors that allow integration onto small and medium commercial UAV platforms without penalizing payload capacity or battery endurance.
  • Deterministic C2 Telemetry: Delivers predictable, low-bandwidth data channels dedicated to real-time aircraft tracking, geofencing updates, and automated return-to-base protocols.

“The UK government has set a clear objective to achieve routine BVLOS drone operations by 2027. It is now official policy, outlined in the Department for Transport’s Future of Flight action plan as one of five strategic outcomes for the sector,” stated Alastair MacLeod, Chief Executive Officer of Ground Control. “The terrestrial network ceiling means that LTE and 5G networks cannot always be assumed for long range BVLOS operations across rural, remote or offshore environments. The 2027 test presents a challenge for the entire drone industry: real progress lies in fielding systems that regulators can assess, that operators can trust, and that provide predictable coverage.”

Industry Outlook Toward 2027 Deployment

As the 2027 regulatory deadline approaches, connectivity providers, drone manufacturers, and air traffic authorities are accelerating flight-trial validation campaigns. Establishing certified, multi-network communication architectures will determine whether commercial operators can scale BVLOS operations safely within controlled and uncontrolled national airspace.
