Iridium, Deutsche Telekom IoT, and Toyota Demonstrate Satellite Voice Messaging via Iridium NTN Direct

On Thursday, September 10, 2026, satellite communications operator Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) and mobile network operator Deutsche Telekom IoT announced the successful transmission of a voice message over the Iridium NTN Direct service in a live demonstration with Toyota.

Conducted during Telekom Satellite Day 2026, the milestone transmission marks the completion of end-to-end technical integration and a global roaming agreement between Iridium and Deutsche Telekom IoT.

Program History and Global Roaming Architecture

The automotive demonstration represents a key operational milestone in bringing 3GPP-standardized non-terrestrial network (NTN) services to commercial vehicular platforms. The effort builds directly on Iridium’s strategic integration of NTN Direct with Deutsche Telekom’s global IoT core network, which established roaming protocols between terrestrial cellular networks and satellite orbits.

Iridium NTN Direct utilizes the operator’s existing fully operational low Earth orbit (LEO) L-band satellite constellation. The service expands on Iridium’s broader deployment of 3GPP Release 17/18 standards-based Direct-to-Device (D2D) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) connectivity, allowing standard cellular modems to roam between ground-based cell towers and LEO satellites without bespoke hardware architectures.

Automotive Test Configuration and Technical Specifications

During the live demonstration, a voice message stating “testing, testing, one, two, freeway” was transmitted from a Toyota test vehicle directly through Iridium’s LEO satellite constellation to ground receiving nodes.

The technical stack deployed during the proof-of-concept included:

  • Hardware Terminal: The test vehicle was equipped with a Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 development board and a standard Deutsche Telekom IoT Global SIM card.
  • Ultra-Low Bitrate Voice Codec: The voice payload was compressed using Fraunhofer IIS’s AI-based NESC (Neural Speech Codec) audio platform, which enables natural-sounding voice transmission over narrow bandwidths operating at bitrates of 1 kilobit per second (kb/s) or less.
  • Waveform and Protocol: Utilized standards-based 3GPP NB-IoT protocols transmitted over Iridium’s global L-band spectrum, ensuring signal propagation through adverse weather conditions and dense cloud cover.

Automotive Market Rationale and Supplemental Coverage from Space

The joint initiative targets continuous connectivity for connected vehicles, commercial transport fleets, and autonomous systems operating beyond terrestrial cellular coverage. By integrating satellite NB-IoT capabilities into standard automotive telematics units, vehicle manufacturers can offer safety voice messaging, automated emergency calls (eCall), remote diagnostic telemetry, and hazard alerts in remote rural areas or during ground infrastructure outages.

Beyond connected vehicles, the seamless roaming architecture expands coverage for industrial IoT verticals, including international logistics tracking, smart grid utilities, agricultural sensor monitoring, and emergency response operations.

“The voice message sent over our network from a Toyota vehicle illustrates how Iridium NTN Direct will enhance consumer and commercial applications for people and assets operating outside traditional coverage areas,” stated Matt Desch, Chief Executive Officer of Iridium. “This demonstration is a glimpse into the future of truly global, standards-based connectivity. Now is the time to begin integrating Iridium NTN Direct.”

The demonstration with Toyota shows how technological innovation can be turned into concrete added value for our customers.”

“We are very pleased to support this Automotive NTN Voice PoC by providing Fraunhofer’s innovative AI-based NESC Voice Codec,” stated Manfred Lutzky, Head of the Communications Audio Department at Fraunhofer IIS. “NESC enables reliable, natural sounding and highly intelligible satellite voice services at scale by operating at bitrates of 1 kb/s or less. This demonstration with Iridium, Deutsche Telekom, Toyota and the other partners is a great example of cross-industry collaboration that will help to grow the satellite voice ecosystem.”

Commercial Launch Schedule and Beta Testing Timeline

With technical integration and global roaming agreements finalized between the partners, selected enterprise customers across Europe are currently conducting field tests and developing applications on the Iridium network using Deutsche Telekom’s Global SIM. Full commercial availability of Iridium NTN Direct for Deutsche Telekom IoT enterprise customers is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
