Banglalink Partners with SpaceX to Launch South Asia’s First Direct-to-Device Starlink Mobile Service in Bangladesh

October 12, 2026 by donmcgee

On Friday, October 9, 2026, telecommunications operator Banglalink—a subsidiary of global digital operator VEON Ltd.—announced an agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlink Mobile direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity across Bangladesh.

The commercial agreement marks the first operational Direct-to-Cell satellite service in South Asia, enabling standard mobile subscribers to connect directly to orbital constellation payloads in terrestrial coverage gaps.

Commercial Tariff Structure and Service Parameters

Banglalink, the third-largest mobile network operator in Bangladesh, will deliver Starlink Mobile connectivity directly to unmodified 4G smartphones equipped with standard Banglalink SIM cards. The service configuration eliminates the requirement for specialized user terminals, external dish hardware, or proprietary mobile chipsets.

Under the commercial launch framework, Banglalink’s tariff offerings include:

  • Five free satellite-routed SMS messages per subscriber per month.
  • A complimentary one-month satellite data bundle for initial onboarding.
  • Automated network failover between terrestrial 4G cell towers and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

The service rollout follows formal regulatory authorization granted by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in September 2026, establishing the regulatory framework for non-terrestrial network (NTN) spectrum usage and satellite-to-cellular interconnectivity.

Regional Expansion Across VEON Operating Subsidiaries

The Bangladesh deployment expands VEON’s multi-market partnership with SpaceX’s direct-to-cell initiative across emerging telecommunications markets. Banglalink’s sister operating companies under the VEON umbrella have previously integrated Starlink Mobile connectivity to strengthen network resilience:

  • In Ukraine, Kyivstar reached 3.0 million Starlink Direct to Cell users to maintain connectivity across disrupted regional infrastructure.
  • In Central Asia, Beeline Kazakhstan partnered with Starlink Direct to Cell to extend mobile coverage across remote topographies.

Operational Outlook and South Asian NTN Adoption

By deploying Starlink Mobile across Bangladesh’s low-lying and flood-prone geography, Banglalink aims to provide resilient emergency communications during severe weather events when terrestrial mobile towers experience power outages or physical damage. The deployment serves as an operational model for direct-to-device adoption across neighboring South Asian telecommunications markets.
