Speedcast and Soya IT Complete Hybrid Dual-LEO Connectivity Rollout on 41 Wallenius Wilhelmsen Vessels

October 21, 2026 by donmcgee

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, communications provider Speedcast and maritime systems integrator Soya IT Marine Solutions announced the completed deployment of upgraded digital connectivity suites across 41 roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels operated by logistics carrier Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

The fleetwide rollout establishes a multi-orbit satellite architecture to deliver high-bandwidth data links for operational navigation and crew welfare along international trade corridors.

Remote Fleet Deployment and Operational Logistics

The communications upgrade was executed entirely through remote commissioning to accommodate the fast-turnaround schedules of commercial cargo operations. Working as the primary technology provider for Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Soya IT Marine Solutions partnered with Speedcast engineering teams to configure and activate the network equipment without disrupting shipping schedules or taking vessels out of service. Because the car carriers maintain port calls lasting only several hours, hardware was delivered directly to scheduled ports and brought online by onboard personnel under remote technical supervision.

Hybrid Multi-Orbit Architecture and Network Specifications

The network solution delivers a managed Wide Area Network (WAN) combining high-throughput low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations with resilient narrowband backups. The system architecture pairs SpaceX Starlink terminals with Eutelsat OneWeb LEO capacity to provide low-latency broadband managed through Speedcast’s routing infrastructure.

To ensure continuous connectivity across remote oceanic lanes, the primary LEO links are supported by Iridium Certus L-band transceivers and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) cellular modems for coastal operations. This rollout builds upon Speedcast’s operational experience in integrating Starlink high-throughput capacity into hybrid network solutions and deploying its SIGMA edge network management software across commercial fleets.

Executive Perspective on Digital Enablement

Leadership underscored that robust connectivity is critical for modern vessel management.

“This new partnership isn’t just about connectivity; it’s about making vessels digitally ready for the future, enabling secure, real-time data, strengthening operational performance, and improving the working environment onboard,” stated James Trevelyan, Executive Vice President of Global Sales at Speedcast.

Fleet Scale and Operational Integration

As the world’s largest Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) operator, Wallenius Wilhelmsen operates approximately 125 vessels across 15 global trade routes. With 41 vessels upgraded, the carrier’s bridge teams now maintain continuous access to cloud-based enterprise management and navigation software, while crew members gain improved broadband access during off-duty hours.
